“In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made, oh There's nothing you can't do, now you're in New York. These streets will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you, let's hear it for New York…”
JAY-Z & Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind Lyrics

Walking the entrance ramp on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Breakaway, you feel the electricity immediately.  Docked right in New York City, as you approach the ship you see the huge, brilliantly colored, NYC inspired mural by famed pop artist Peter Max, painted on Breakaway’s hull.

Chris and I were fortunate to take a maiden voyage on a “cruise to nowhere” to experience her first hand.  The vibe of the ship hits you the moment you step aboard.  From her towering promenade with three entire decks of daytime and nighttime entertainment, to her tastefully appointed state rooms; you know the designers of this ship were going for “casual” elegance. Like New York City, permanent home of the beautiful Norwegian Breakaway, the feeling aboard is “cool” and “fun.”

There are close to 30 different dining options on the Breakaway.  We had a wonderful lunch at their signature sushi bar “Wasabi.” We felt like we were in an upscale NYC sushi restaurant and experienced the freshest sushi this side of the Fulton Fish Market.

One evening we made reservations for our own 20 minute experience inside the icy enclave of the Breakaway’s “Ice Bar.”  This very “cool” bar is kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit and boasts ice sculptures of NYC landmarks along with NYC inspired cocktails served in their own icy beverage containers. You’ll want to leave your shorts and flip-flops behind and put on the provided parka and gloves to truly enjoy this experience.

There is something for everyone and lots with family recreation in mind.  They have five multi-story waterslides that weave in and out of the decks like colorful crazy straws, two swimming pools, and four hot tubs.  We attended a performance of the 80’s rock extravaganza “Rock of Ages” that was worthy of its Broadway counterpart just a few blocks away. It is R-rated and isn’t really appropriate for younger children.

We are excited about this new ship for our clients who live a few hours away in any direction.  They will not have to pay airfare in order to get the true “cruise” experience and it’s docked right in the middle of one of the world’s most exciting cities as an added bonus.

We would absolutely love to discuss our experience and answer any questions that you might have about how the Breakaway might fit you and your family’s vacation expectations.  As always, we look for the highest quality and best value for our client’s vacation dollars. The Breakaway might be the perfect solution for a cruise getaway vacation from the NY Metro area, and you will avoid the cost and expense of a flight.
